Insomnia is when a person
cannot sleep properly, which results in daytime fatigue and poor
performance caused by insufficient sleep. Insomnia can be
Transient, where it lasts for few days, Short-term where it
lasts for two or three weeks or Chronic where insomnia last for
more than a month or longer. People with sleep disorder may
experience one of the following:
·Inability to sleep
despite being tired.
·Waking in the night.
·Insufficient sleep.
·Waking up too early.
·Not feeling refreshed after sleep.
Common Causes of
Insomnia
·Physical - Pain, arthritis, headaches, itching, restless leg
syndrome
·Physiological - Disruptions in the sleeping environment,
including light, noise, jet lag, reading heavy books etc.
·Psychological - Anxieties, depression, dementia, work related
worries, relationship problems or death of closer ones

Remedies for Insomnia
Tips 1:
Eat at least 3 cups of curds daily.
Tips 2:
Mix 2 tsp of honey to 1 glass of warm water. Drink just before
sleeping. Give half the amount to babies it will help put them
to sleep.
Tips 3:
Drink warm milk with honey.
Tips 4:
1 tsp juice of celery leaves with stalks and 1 tsp of honey.
Tips 5:
Have raw onion salad.
Tips 6:
2 tsp of fenugreeks leaves juice with 1 tsp of honey at bed
times daily.

Tips 1: Herbs and Herbal Therapies - Insomnia can be relieved by
the use of sedative herbs such as hops and valerians are used to
relax the nervous system so that you enjoy natural, restorative
sleep.
Numerous plants have
sedative action. Plants commonly prescribed as aids in promoting
sleep include: passionflower, hops, valerian, skullcap, and
chamomile.
Tips 2: Milk and Honey - A cup of warm milk sweetened with honey
should be taken before going to bed. Take it everyday.
Tips 3: Lemon balm Tea - Lemon balm tea is extremely relaxing and
induces sleep.
Tips 4: Valerian tea - Prepare valerian tea in the morning by
adding 2 teaspoon of valerian root to 2 cups of warm water.
Tips 5: Onion - Take raw onion with meals particularly with
dinner.
Tips 6: Tulsi - Patient may be given a leaf of tulsi for chewing,
and also spread some tulsi leaves below patients pillow and the
corners of bed below the bedsheet. As the smell of tulsi leaves
will strike the person's nostril, the person will start feeling
sleepy and soon he will fall into sleep.
Tips 7: Curd - Consume plenty of curd. Also massage head with
curd before washing. This is very helpful.
Tips 8: Cumin Seeds - Take some cumin seeds and fry then in a
very little amount of ghee. Now grind then into powder form. One
teaspoon of this powder - mixed with the pulp of a ripe banana
may be given to the patient suffering from insomnia at night
daily.
Tips 9: Fenugreek Leaves and Honey - Two teaspoons juice of
fenugreek leaves alongwith 1 teaspoon honey may be taken daily.
Tips 10: Celery Leaves - Juice of celery leaves (ajwain ka patta)
with thick ribs and brittle stalks mixed with a tablespoon of
honey when had at night before retiring helps to relax into a
restful sleep.
Some Other Remedies for Insomnia:
Tips 1:
Try exercising in the morning to help burn up extra energy - it
also helps start your day freshly. Also do calming relaxation
exercises such as light stretching before bed.
Tips 2:
Do not eat or drink caffeinated foods or beverages for at least
6 hours prior to bedtime.
Tips 3:
Eat a good meal shortly before sunset, followed two hours later
by a bath in lukewarm water.
Tips 4:
Rinse the eyes with rosewater at night and then
add a drop of ghee (clarified butter). Keep the eyes closed and
sleep.
Tips 5:
Comb the hair before retiring. Massage feet, calves, nape of the
neck and shoulders.
Tips 6:
Avoid high protein meals for dinner; instead leave your last
meal of the day for complex carbohydrates.
Tips 7:
Drink a cup of warm milk with honey - you may
also add some nutmeg.
Tips 8:
Occasional Sleeplessness can often be treated without
medications, however if you have frequent or constant problems
with insomnia, it's always best to see a doctor, as it may be a
symptom of a more serious problem.
Tips 9: Water and Honey - Add 2 teaspoons of honey to a
big cupful of water and have it before going to bed. Babies
generally fall asleep after having honey.

Take calcium, iron, and potassium to help with sleep.
